Why Should You Use Homemade Cleaning Products?

Homemade cleaning products can get your house shining as good as any chemical based cleaner. On top of that, you will avoid bringing dangerous toxins into your home that can pose a risk to your family.

The nice thing about using green cleaners is you can also save some serious money. In fact, you likely have everything in your home right now to get it looking great.

spary cleaner Picture what you have in your cleaning cupboard. You probably have a number of cleaners with the ugly cross-bone or poison symbol on them. Did you know that each time you use one of these cleaners you likely leave a residue on the surface you just cleaned?

This can be dangerous for everyone in your family because the residue can end up being ingested by you and your kids.

Think about how many times you have cleaned your bathroom with a commercial cleaner. Now think about your kids setting their tooth brush on the counter and then placing it in their mouths. That residue can easily be transferred to their mouth. Things like this can happen every day; we just don’t think about it.

Every year in the United States chemical based cleaners account for just under ten percent of all toxic exposures. Many store-bought cleaning products have been linked to asthma, skin irritations and even cancer. This is not good.

Why do so many people continue to bring these chemical laced products into their home?

Some sceptics wonder if homemade cleaners can do as good of a job as their chemical based cousins. Take it from me, they do.

Eco friendly cleaning is gaining momentum all over the world for good reason. Not only do homemade cleaning products help us get rid of these nasty toxins, they can save us a lot of money over time.

These homemade green cleaners are usually made from;

  • White distilled vinegar – an economical natural agent that is an effective cleaner.
  • Tea tree oil – provides a fresh and natural scent.
  • A natural soap or detergent – double check the label to verify it is chemical free.
  • Quartered lemons – terrific for getting at nasty mildew on bathroom tile grout.
  • Baking soda – great for almost everything and a natural deodorizer.
  • Washing soda (Sodium Carbonate) – great for removing oily stains.

Here are a few quick examples of how using baking soda during your cleaning routine can replace potentially harmful store-bought cleaners.

  • Use baking soda to clean the counters in your bathroom.
  • Mix it with water and make a an effective scrubbing agent.
  • Add baking soda to a bowl in any room in your house to remove unpleasant odours.
  • If you have pets, sprinkle it on your carpet to get rid of unwanted pet scents.

Generally speaking, eco friendly cleaning products cost a fraction of the price associated with their chemical based counterparts. And they do an effective job. Industry estimates put the cost of homemade cleaners at about 10% of their store-bought chemical based cousins.

To think of it in another way, if it cost you $100 a year on store-bought cleaning products to do a specific job, homemade cleaning products could do it for just $10. That sounds like a pretty good deal to me!

If you don’t have time to make your own natural cleaning products, don’t worry. There are lots of chemical free cleaners on the market. Just read the label before you buy and make sure you stay green.
