eating green food Greening your food means you need to make some sacrifices and change your family's nutrition habits, for example you'll need to reduce junk food, less takeouts, and cook more at home.

Here are some easy to do tips that will motivate you to green your family's cooking and eating habits.

Green Your Nutrition Habits

Give your child tools for good nutrition habits. Eating habits are being built at early stage of life and may prevent many health problems that we have as grown ups. Good eating habits may also prevent kid's obesity, hyperactivity, allergies and digestion problems.

Some basic recommendations are to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, avoid fried food and processed food that contain trans fats, saturated fats, and large amounts of sodium and sugar. However, before you start any nutritional changes you should consult with your nutritionist.

Cook At Home

Homemade food is healthier for your kids since you can use fresh, organic, natural ingredients and prepare healthy meals.

As a busy parent, you probably don’t have much time to cook so takeouts are an easy choice for you. But there is another option, when you cook, prepare larger portions so you can freeze them and eat later. This will save you money on takeouts and your kids could enjoy a homemade meal.

At home, we cook once a week large quantities of food so we could freeze them and eat during the week. This way, my girls always have homemade food even when I don’t have time to cook. Click here for green and healthy recipes that kids love.

Green Your Cooking

When washing vegetables and fruits avoid washing under running water, instead use a big bowl or basin filled with water. Try to use reusable cooking tools such as silicone cookware, and food storage containers over plastic wrap. Use kitchen reusable towels instead of paper ones.

Avoid Using Microwave

Try to avoid using your microwave for preparing food, microwave cooking is not natural, nor healthy, and is far more dangerous to the human body than you might think. Click here to read more about the hidden hazards of microwave cooking.

Stay Away From Food Additives

Some of the processed foods you buy contain food additives that may endanger your health and are thought to contribute to hyperactivity in pre-school children.

The food additives are substances that added to foods for the purpose of preservation, coloring, texture, increasing flavor and more. Read the labels and try to stay away from propyl gallate, monosodium glutamate (MSG), artificial food coloring, sodium nitrite and aspartame (artificial sweetener).

Keep Away From Genetically Modified Foods (GM)

GM foods are crop plants that have been modified in the laboratory to enhance desired traits or improved nutritional content and they have been created for human or animal consumption. Although scientific researches are inconclusive as for the health risks in consuming GM foods there is a growing concern that tempering with gens in foods may have an unexpected and negative impact on human health.

Organic Food

The organic industry claims that their food is safer, more nutritious, and better for you than non-organic food since it's more nutritious, contain lower pesticide residue, and it's better for kids immune system.

On the other hand, according to the USDA (US department of agriculture), research shows that nutritionally there is no evidence that organic produce is better or safer than conventionally grown produce. Organic foods differ from conventional foods only in the way in which they are grown and processed.

I recommend you use your own discretion and do what you feel best for your child.

Greening your food is about going back to basics, eating natural and organic food such as fresh vegetables and fruits, avoiding artificial food additives, cooking more at home and consuming less processed and junk foods.
