Save Energy at Home

How to Help the Environment and Reduce Your Electricity Bill

When you save energy at home you get to help the environment, you set an example for your child on how simple actions can make a huge difference and the BEST part is that you save money on your electricity bill.

With the world heading towards energy crisis, increasing demand of energy exceeds its supply and high electricity prices, it's our responsibility to take an action. It's time to save energy and the best place to start is at home.

There are some very simple actions you can take; all you need is the desire to do so and by that set an example for your kids so that they will follow your footsteps.

Here are some of the ideas you can use at home to reduce your electricity bill:

Switch off the lights when you're out of the room. Kids tend to go around the house and switch all the lights, they go from one room to another and they leave the lights on. Talk to them about that and make them understand the importance of switching the lights off when they leave the room even for one minute.

Change to compact fluorescent light bulbs. Make some smart power investments by replacing your incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. These bulbs are great power-saving.

Initiate smart home appliance usage:

  • Minimize the number of washes by washing full load of clothes every time.

  • Try to avoid using the dryer machine, hang your laundry to dry out in the sun.

  • Keep the monitor and the computer switched off when you are not using them.

  • Turn off the TV/ DVD when you're not using them, the standby mode keep consuming electricity.

  • Set the temperature of your air conditioner at the minimum or maximum best you are comfortable with, it helps save a lot of energy.

  • Keep the geyser thermostat at the minimum heat. You do not need to heat the water at a very high temperature or for too long.

  • Bring hot food to room temperatures before putting it into the refrigerator. You can also save power by taking cold or frozen food out of the refrigerator much before the mealtime, thereby saving power in heating it.

Go solar. There are many wonderful solar alternatives you can use at home, from solar light bulbs to solar heating and cooling systems. I live in Israel where we have sun 360 days a year thus solar power is a must have here. For years we are using the solar water heating system which saves us hundreds of dollars of our electricity bill.
